Google Business Profile

Getting into the map results in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire

That box of three businesses with a map above them, sitting at the top of a local search, takes a large share of the clicks. Here is roughly what decides who's in it.

Three things Google is weighing

Broadly, Google's local results come down to relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance means your listing genuinely matches what was searched for. Distance is fairly self-explanatory. Prominence is a mix of how well known and well reviewed your business is, both on Google and across the wider web.

You can influence all three, but prominence is where most small businesses have the most room to improve quickly.

Get the basics exactly right first

  • Claim and fully verify your listing if you haven't already
  • Choose the most accurate primary category, and add relevant secondary ones
  • Fill in every field: services, opening hours, a proper description, attributes
  • Add real photos regularly, not once and never again

A surprising number of local listings in towns like Sandy, Biggleswade and Hitchin are still half-finished or claimed by nobody. Fixing that alone often improves visibility noticeably.

Reviews matter more than most business owners think

Both the number and the recency of reviews feed into prominence. A business with three reviews from 2021 will generally lose out to a competitor with fifteen reviews spread across the last six months, even if the older business is objectively better. The simplest fix is a habit, not a campaign: ask every happy customer, ideally with a direct link or a QR code, right after the job or purchase is done.

Local links and mentions help too

Being mentioned by name on other local websites, whether that's a directory, a supplier's site, a local news piece or a sponsorship page, signals to Google that you're a genuine, established local business rather than a listing that appeared overnight.

What a small town changes

In a market as competitive as Luton or Bedford, getting into the local pack usually needs sustained effort across all of the above. In a smaller town like Shefford or Ampthill, the bar is often much lower, since fewer competitors have bothered to do any of this properly. It's worth finding out which situation you're actually in before paying for ongoing SEO work you may not need yet.
